We say we want to get closer to God. What is it that is creating a distance between us? We go to church, read our Bible, pray and fast. Yet, it seems there is still something lacking. I ask myself, is there sin in my life?
The other day I was talking to someone, and they said something that triggered an unpleasant memory. One I had forgotten. The emotion swept over me afresh. I was very young when this happened. I had forgotten about it for a long time and never dealt with it.
I knew I had to forgive this wrongdoing. In a way, I wanted to hold on to it for self-justification. As I talked to the Lord about it, I realized, if I don’t forgive, I’m just as guilty as my offender.
Sometimes we need to be broken. Too often, we have remnants that have taken space in our hearts. Things that are covered don’t heal. We must expose it, deal with it, and forgive. Otherwise, it will hinder our walk with God. Yet if we become broken before him, everything can flow out.
The only way to have more of God is to have less of me.
“He must increase, but I must decrease.” (John 3:30)
